Class Description

Our Beginner Pointe class is designed for students ages 11-13 who have studied ballet for at least three years.

Instructor's approval is required to attend.

Classes are 45 min long.

Sur la pointe work is a very serious step in ballet training. Students are expected to be very dedicated and disciplined, and will be required to take 2 to 3 technique classes per week.

To decrease possible risk of injury, the following pointe class will be introduced only to the girls who show adequate physical strength, accurate technique and necessary mental awareness for such a challenging endeavor.

When dancing sur la pointe the weight of the torso and legs are supported by the intrinsic muscles of the feet and the longitudinal arches. The majority of the weight is supported by the metatarsals and fourteen phalanges, and by the calf and thighs along with the abdomen. IBT Beginner Pointe class focuses on a foot strength-building program designed for pointe readiness. Relevé excercises will be introduced in order to make the transition into pointe shoes a smooth one.

Students will learn and practice pointe barre work with emphasis on individual's correct foot and body alignment as well as study of the proper techniques for the execution of more difficult steps.

IBT Academy Instructors guarantee a slow, thorough, and careful approach to assure a safe and solid foundation that will help students to be in control and at ease when dancing on pointe.

Our Advanced Pointe classes are recommended for experienced students that have completed 2 or more years of pointe work. The technique at this level is very fast and very demanding, and students must have acquired proper strength and ability to safely participate in this class.

For experienced dancers, pointe technique is an essential skill in classical training. IBT Academy Advanced Pointe class is designed to help systematically increase security and control sur la pointe in order to develop important for a classical dancer quality of lightness and artistry.

Beginner Ballet

Beginner Ballet will explore and perform dance movements, using the skills, vocabulary, and language of dance.

Students will start by learning the very basics of the classical ballet syllabus, including the five basic positions. Attention will be given to important stretching exercises for specific muscle groups, which will be taught and practiced regularly. Beginner ballet technique and some of the terminology will be introduced, including plié, relevé tendu, passé, battement, sauté and chassé. Learning the basic technique perfectly is most important: ballet steps build from simpler to more complex, so a problem of technique in one area will be magnified in other areas.

In the best traditions of Agrippina Vaganova teaching technique, early training will focuse on the basics of port de bras (movement of arms) and epaulement (or the stylized turning of the shoulders and upper body). Gradually introduced to the ballet barre, the young students will work on correct body placement, balance, and proper use of arms. Key elements of classical ballet are beauty and elegance, and IBT Academy Teachers will focus on getting students to bring out these qualities in their dancing.

Last but not least, the students of Beginner Ballet I will learn proper ballet class etiquette, as well as develop their listening skills, and ability to follow instructions.

Classes are 1 hour long.

Beginner Ballet I students will participate in the End-of-the-Year Concert. In addition, two observation classes will be held in the studio during regular class time twice a year. At these times parents and family members will be invited to observe, videotape and photograph their children.

Center work will focus on the development and coordination of port de bras: developing a strong center will later resulting in more graceful and powerful performances. Students will be taught how to achieve stability and expression in adagio, while petite allegro work will focus on learning how to move quickly through clean technical habits and clarity.

Linking and transition steps as well as diagonals and menège will be further developed and refined. Traveling ballet steps, leaps, and improvisation, necesary to allow freedom of movement and artistic expression, will be taught and perfected.

Beginner Ballet II students will be challenged with increased complexity as they advance to the higher levels, and their confidence in using the physical mechanics will gradually build up.

Students will take on extended, complex movement phrases and learn to combine the new steps in a variety of enchainments designed to improve their physical skills and challenge them mentally. They will be further introduced to more adagio, petite and grande allegro, and sur la pointe. Exercises designed to improve accuracy, speed and the ability to link movements will be taught.
